About Sista

Sista is a 6 yr old purebred Canadian mare, standing about 14.2hh. She was consigned to an auction in Rimbey, Alberta on September 27, 2019. We had no advance notice she was there, putting her at some risk. Gigi R., was onsite and knew about the Society, so she sprang into action, starting to bid when she realized that only one other person seemed at all interested in this mare – the meat man!!

Thanks to Gigi’s quick actions, the mare was purchased and we were contacted and quickly arranged for Gigi to get reimbursed. She only bid on our behalf so it was critical she was not out of pocket. We put word out to our community regarding a foster home, but Gigi offered to do that as well. So Sista went with Gigi and settled in nicely at her farm. We are eternally grateful for Gigi’s efforts!!

As so often happens, Gigi and her family fell in love with Sista so approached us about adoption. Through that phone call we learned that Sista, and her foal, had been consigned by a lovely older gentleman who had purchased Sista from a breeder but, as he was aging, realized he needed to sell his horses and retire. We know Sista’s breeding – exactly – and continue to be devastated by the number of breeders not bothering to register their horses. Not only does this greatly reduce their value but, more importantly, every non-registered horse is – in essence – lost to the breed. Given the Canadian Horse is critically endangered, every animal is precious; especially those that can produce offspring, like this lovely young mare. .

Sista is broke to ride so will be joining Gigi’s other horses at a horse camp in Alberta. She’ll spend the spring and summer teaching youngsters how to ride and exposing them to the wonder that is horses. She’ll also educate these youth about the National Horse of Canada. Through the fall and winter, Sista will roam around Gigi’s farm, and just be loved. Should a hardship clause be adopted by the Canadian Horse Breeder’s Association, we will work with Gigi to get Sista’s papers.
